Historically

Immerse yourself in the story of the place and its historical heritage.

Upperud

Upperud was home to Dalsland's oldest ironworks, which had been granted privileges in 1674. The ironworks enjoyed its heyday from the mid-18th century onwards for a hundred years. In the early 1800s, the Billingsfors ironworks property was purchased, and in 1819, Upperuds och Billingsfors Bruk was formed, a company that operated until 1854. The ironworks was of great importance to the entire region and had its own shipyard and many sailing ships.

A school for industrial workers was established in Upperud as early as the 1770s. In the 1830s, a priest named Anders Lindbäck was a teacher there. He was later sentenced to death for a series of murders after mixing arsenic into the communion wine. The sentence was never carried out because Lindbäck took his own life in custody in Karlstad. The mill was closed down in the 1870s, but the old and beautiful mill environment still remains, a reminder of a bygone era of greatness. It was also from here that the construction of the Dalsland Canal was managed. The so-called Kamersbostaden was first the office of Nils Ericson and later his son, Werner. It could be said that this is where the Dalsland Canal began, as the locks in Köpmannebro were reported separately until 1909.
